When I lived in Asheville 20 + years ago, I found something called a "chuck wagon sandwich" at a drive-in at Marion and a few other places. It is a sandwich made with a breaded ground beef patty. Is this a regional treat?

I agree - I can't remember the last time I saw that on a menu, and I travel all over western NC and the entire state.

Maybe it's an Asheville or western NC thing.

No, don't think so. My parents had a restaurant in Asheville 20-30 years ago and we got chuckwagon steaks from a restaurant supplier. In a box filled with frozen patties. Made a nice sandwich

I always associated them with being western as in out west chuckwagon and roundups but is not a NC thing

I know of a few restaurant's in Hickory and Taylorsville that have chuck wagon Sandwiches on their menu. In small towns in NW, North Carolina, they can be quite common.

NOT from N.C, but the Chuck Wagon sandwich IS on a few of the menus around West Tennessee. These are the Mom & Pop independents. The local greasy spoon that offers this sandwich does not seem to be able to keep the breaded beef patty in stock. Here it is also offered as "country fried" and/or "chicken fried" steak & when ordered as such as a plate lunch, is served with gravy. The sandwich that is called "chuck wagon" is served with mayo & on a hamburger bun. I try to order each time we are in this establishment. I have them "dress" it with extra mayo & a layer of cole slaw. Good eating.

Is it as described by the OP, i.e., a breaded patty?

It appears to be on the menu of all the various 21 South locations. As many times as I've been to the one on Independence, I never even noticed it.
