Look around Greenville. Rent is pretty cheap around here. $700/moth can get you some good places around here. Housing isn't very expensive either. $160,000 would be a very good start for new construction houses.

I just so happened on Spring Lake on a realty website and the house I'm interested is beautiful but I need and want to be safe with a fairly decent school district. It doesn't have to be Chapel Hill or Apex but it does need to be relatively safe. Also, is it common not to hear back from people? I mean I've placed a ton of calls to different properties and noone ever responds. It's quite off putting.
What exactly is your budget btw?

As far as renting goes we would like to stay under $1300 but are willing to go as high as $1500 for the right house. We won't be in the market to buy until next year or the year after as we are repairing our credit. I did see a lovely house in Pikeville NC but I'm feeling a bit worried about the demographics.

Well that's good!
Looks kinda like the same concept of Fayetteville's Village Green off Village Drive.

Personally, I would avoid Spring Lake. I used to work in Spring Lake. Plus, there's a lot of road construction going on right now that makes it a pain to drive through sometimes. Also, the schools are poorly rated. Look up the school near the house you are interested in and see what I mean. NC School Report Cards

I would describe Spring Lake as a small city that is a suburb of both Fayetteville and Fort Bragg that is going through major gentrification.
Pros;
Outside of Fayetteville hustle & bustle
More house for less money
All relatively New schools (Overhills elementary, middle, and high)
Decent commercial economy
Good economic development

Cons;
High crime
Traffic cones are everywhere
No vibrant downtown

I do however think Spring Lake isn't very bad. I'd live in Spring Lake over Rocky Mount at least lol. I have a cousin who lives in an apartment in Spring Lake, he plans on moving to Fayetteville once his lease is up, but he hasn't been robbed or shot at in Spring Lake, and lives a very comfortable life.
Overhills schools are in Harnett county, which are just as bad as Fayetteville schools. I would never send my children to any of those schools, especially the high school. No offense.

Spring Lake definitely has a high crime rate, as well as a high number of sex offenders. We used to have a few regular SL police officers come into our office to check on us in the evenings to make sure we were all right.
