How come North Carolina is the only state in the Southeast that does not have an automobile assembly plant? I was really rooting for the state to get the Toyota-Mazda Plant that was going to be located near Greensboro. That was actually the perfect spot for the facility, since the Triad as a whole is known for it's heavy manufacturing.

Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas and Virginia all don't have automobile assembly plants. Virginia has a truck assembly plant, as does NC (along with a school bus manufacturer).

The reason NC doesn't have one is that, until the past few years, the state refused to play the incentives game hard enough to get one. Now, other competing states (SC, TN, AL, GA, MS, KY) have multiple plants and established supplier chains, making it difficult for the automobile manufacturers to justify coming to NC. We may have missed the boat, so to speak.

"Technically" North Carolina does have an auto plant.

Thomas Built Buses in High Point, which there are a few plant locations in the city. Yes they are buses but buses are technically automobiles.

Got you, so what does that mean for NC's economy?

Its not a make or break issue. NC has a state GDP of almost $600 billion, so the presence of an auto assembly plant isn't going to make a huge difference. It would certainly be nice to have, and I'm definitely hoping we can land one, but if we didn't get Toyota/Mazda, its hard to imagine the project we will get.

Oh wow, I did not know that NC's GDP was that high.
