Well, I finally visited Wilmington this past weekend (Carolina Beach to be exact with a drive through Wilmington). In my opinion, Wilmington's downtown area is definitely worthy of it's own visit while staying at a downtown area hotel!
It's been years since I've cared about going to Wrightsville Beach, but give me a downtown Wilmington getaway anytime!

It is a nice area with lots of bars and restaurants. Plenty to do, at least for a long weekend. We'd looked at potentially buying a 2nd home in the downtown area at one time so we're fans of what it could be.

Cool. I hope you can eventually visit the other two coastal regions: The Crystal Coast, Beaufort,AB, Pine Knoll Shores and Emerald Isle where I spent a couple of summers (It's a local, less flashy, boat and fishing-oriented area, and the Outer Banks which has the most Northerners vacationing. Up there the rental houses average around 15-18 bedrooms and go for $30K a week.
Each coastal area is different and all are popular with folks all the way to the Plains states.
I’m not a beach person at all, but I still marvel that I’ve never been
To the NC coast although was born and reared in the state.
Did you do SC beaches growing up or just no beaches? I grew up trekking to Charleston beaches as a kid and an occasional Myrtle weekend. Though we did visit family at Morehead/Atlantic Beach a couple times, I completely missed the Outer Banks and the Wilmington beaches until well until adulthood. I only started going to the Outer Banks in the last 6 years or so, and still have never gone to any Wilmington beach (though I have been to Wilmington a few times).

As a kid, we went to Myrtle Beach once. My parents are not beach people either. As an adult, I’ve been to SC beaches twice. I’ve been to beaches in other countries more than beaches in the States, at the behest of others. I am eager to get to NC beaches now because everyone in the DC area raves about OBX and Shames me when I say I have never been.
I wish OBX had more resort hotels. The Sanderling is just OK IMO.
You pretty much have to go the vacation rental route which is less appealing for a 2 or 3 night stay, especially for couples or people that aren't traveling in a group to split the cost of a full home.

Growing up in Raleigh; Topsail-Wilmington-Carolina beach stretch was the main go-to. I have been to the Outer Banks exactly once and it was about 7 years ago. Friends parents bought a place on Emerald Isle so the last several years that had been "go-to" and I think the Crystal Coast is now my favorite.
I dated a girl in college who was from Charlotte (re: Huntersville) and her family almost exclusively "beached" in SC (mostly North Myrtle and Hilton Head). It was perplexing to me at first but makes sense when you look at the drive times.
A semi-topical observation in semantics is....I feel like people in the Triangle and Triad (and most of the rest of the state not near a border) live in "North Carolina"...and people in Charlotte area (and Brunswick County) live in "the Carolinas"
Wilmington is certainly perceived differently by white and black Carolinians, at least on this side of NC...
Nobody black, save for those in neighboring rural counties to Wilmington, are clamoring to get to Wilmington. Wilmington has an extremely ugly history that many of us are cognizant of, on top of it being a boring, bland city. Black Wilmington natives are trying to get outta there...
White people love that trash ass town, though...
