Hello - My family is relocating to NC due my husbands business. We have the opportunity to choose any locale since he travels up and down the east coast, but would like to be with 2 hours of an airport so that gives us some area. My last son will be entering as a senior in high school, is an honor student and wants to pursue an engineering degree. He has worked very hard up to now and wants to be able to maintain the same quality of education as he has in MA. Can you suggest communities that are affordable with good high school programs (honors/AP classes) where housing would not be in a neighbhorhood. Done that, would like some space to breathe. Thank you
The best engineering schools in the state are Duke University (Private) and North Carolina State University (Public) located in Durham and Raleigh. Good airport (KRDU) in the area too. I'd look in Wake County.
Thank you. But I'm looking for information for high schools for the one year and communities with the better high schools. It has been hard to determine online how the communities district their schools and which are the successful ones at the high school level. Thank you.
I think you can find what you are looking for in the Triangle area of NC. Perhaps Wake county like the poster above already mentioned. Chapel Hill has some of the best schools in the area if not the state.
However, you need to provide some more info about what you consider "affordable". I am also a little confused about your request for a home not in a neighborhood. You will typically find the best schools in NC are in the more suburban areas and not so much out in the rural parts. That's not to say you can't find a home with a nice yard that is served by an excellent high school, but again a lot depends on what your housing budget is. The areas with the best schools are typically more expensive than those with less than stellar schools, but that can be said for just about any state.
