I use TaxAct Online for FREE - yes it's free no matter what your income - you just have to tolerate the ads asking you to upgrade to their deluxe version. . . and last year I did pay for the TaxAct State Return.
It walks you through everything, including deductions related to home purchase - and yes, our seller paid our closing costs, including all points, yet WE were able to deduct them. That was a nice surprise for me! We also deducted moving expenses, and had a two-state return, and I feel like TaxAct worked well - and FREE!

Another vote for TurboTax - my returns aren't that complicated, but the process is very easy.

I echo the TurboTax recommendation. You can either use the Online or Desktop version. There are several different levels of TurboTax you can get (basic, deluxe, premium, etc.) and the product tells you what each one includes so you can figure out which one you need. I've used TurboTax for the past 5 years and found it extremely straightforward. It asks you questions (in plain English...usually not tax-talk) to determine what elements are appropriate.

Another good thing about TurboTax is that they keep your previous tax returns on file in case you ever need them. It even carries all your info from the previous year over. That way you don't have to input it again. It is very user friendly and well worth it. If there are any mistakes, it picks them up, and won't let you file until they are fixed.

Thanks for all the feedback. Looks like I should have been using this all along.
I will save some money this year.

Is there any way at all to e-file NC state returns for free even if your AGI is > $56,000? With the economy down and all, I am trying to save where I can.

I just mailed my returns in, they want a lot to efile state returns these days. I had to do 2 and that was $40 total with Taxcut! Since I owed $230 to NC and VA owned me $4 or something I just mailed them. Well worth the 5 minute trip to the post office.
