How far would you say Blowing Rock or Boone or Banner Elk is from the Charlotte to Mooresville to Ft. Mill area? Are any of these way too far to stay at while checking out the Charlotte Metro area for future relocation?
(I have a timeshare and thought maybe I could exchange for NC and save on hotel) BTW....anyone want to buy it???????

Hope you all had a nice holiday!!!! I went to the Florida Gulf Coast and thought I was going to freeze my you know what off. It was only 41 degrees or so for about 3 days but, by the shore, with the windchill, yikessssssssssss... Made me think twice :-)

I can drive to Blowing Rock, NC from Tega Cay, SC (Fort Mill area) in exactly 2hours (Boone and Banner Elk right around 2 1/2 hours...give a few minutes either way)

It is a pretty good hike but it is doable. Boone would be the best. You could take 421 to I-77. From Blowing Rock you could take 321 to I-85 north.

Banner Elk would be the absolute farthest so don't choose to stay there (it's at least 3 hours fromc Charlotte). Best would be Blowing Rock since it is the closest of the 3 you mentioned. You would just have to go out early enough in the morning to see as much as possible before the sun goes down every day. Try to get out of Charlotte - literally out of it on the interstate by 4:00 p.m. every day, or just count on hanging around for dinner, because you will be traveling the same direction back to Blowing Rock down I85 as everyone else trying to get home from work. Good luck!

Thank you for the replies. Think I will stay at a hotel and make the mountains a day trip so we can at least say we saw a little bit of that. For my first trip to NC, the priority would be to see the areas where I might actually live/work. If I tell my other half that we'll be driving at least 4 hrs r/t every day for a week just to check other neighborhoods, I think he would throw me off one of those mountains and never look back :-))

Might want to keep in mind construction on 321. I haven't been that way in years; it's an out-of-the-way road for us; but I had heard that it was being widened (along 421 you see "321 Wide Load Detour" signs). One note of that can be found here http://visitboonenc.com/article.htm?article=101 (broken link)

If anyone travels up that way, it would be nice if they'd post what they see.
