Is this the "Highway Use Tax" I paid when I registered the car or is this some other charge I'll be assessed? It was registered at the beginning of August.

My car is very old; 1994 GM family. What do they use as valuation?

Thanks folks.

The Highway Use Tax is charged on the purchase a vehicle. The amount owed is equal to three percent of the purchase price. It is an excise tax collected by the state.

In addition, vehicle property tax is collected annually by the county and municipality (if applicable) in which the vehicle is registered. That amount is equal to a specified percentage (the tax rate) of the assessed value as determined by an assessor.

You'll get your car property tax bill from your county two or three months after it was registered, so look for it sometime this fall.

The tax rate on cars is the same as the tax rate on real estate. The value assessments are claimed to be "fair market value" (Durham County) or "retail level of trade" (Wake County). I'll leave it to others to chime in on how those values are determined...

Off hand I'm not sure how the property tax is calculated, but we just got our 2003 Corolla is $88.

Thanks folks. I own the car already; I'm assuming the Highway Use Tax was levied for changing the title over to NC.

I'm assuming if a 2003 Corolla is only $88 than a 1994 Buick can't be much.

Thanks again; appreciate the info.

Im just wondering on this subject. Many people imply it is very expensive to register a vehicle in NC. It sounds like it is a double process. You pay the initial fees when you register, and then get a 2nd bill later for excise tax. Is all of this really that expensive on all cars or just new vehicles? I know many states one pays the initial registration fees and the inspection or smog checks and that is it. This HIghway Use Tax" Is this some other fee also beyond the initial registration fees? In many ways it sounds like one would need hundreds of dollars the day they go to the DMV to register and out of state car. Then after that some sum of money to pay the excise tax. Just curious.

When you register your car from out of state you will be charged $150 per car in taxes just to register. Than about 2-3 months late you will receive a property tax bill on your car. I have no idea how much that is going to be since I just registered my car but I am expecting about $100 per car

Hmmm I got the bill for my 03 Focus and it is $106. I hate yearly car tax. I paid taxes on this when I bought it why should I keep paying them yearly? I appealed once on a different car.
