Google maps takes you all the way around. There is a road that cuts straight through to the base that google does not show as an option. It takes you by all the drop zones. I just did Pope to SP last week and it ONLY 25 min doing around the speed limit. I just can't remember the name of the road.

You can also get there by taking Vass rd.

Plank Road? You BETTER obey the speed limits through there though, or the MPs WILL stop you!

My husband and I are also considering relocating to Southern Pines mostly for the choice of private schools. We're currently in the Carolina Lakes golf community in Sanford which is really a beautiful area just very removed from ammenities. Anyway, we clocked the drive from SP to Bragg (using the Longstreet Gate) last weekend and it is definately more like 40 mins give or take. Aberdeen is very commercial (ie: barnes and nobles, harris teeter, bonefish, panera, petsmart...) SP has some great neighborhoods and is probably the most kid friendly of the three (counting Pinehurst). I love their downtown area (unique shops and upscale restaurants). I think the houses in Pinehurst are the nicest but definately a further commute. Anyway, just thought I'd pass on what I found so far. Good luck.
