A few months ago, I had multiple interviews for a state job. They checked my references who said good things. They were very vague on when a decision would be made when asked. The announcement for the position has been reopened and states previous applicants must reapply. The job status had never updated to say whether it had been filled. I would assume that if the person they decided on declined or didn't start they would go down the line. Unless of course someone did not like the other finalists. Has anyone had any experience with the state of NC process recently and/or encountered this before?

It sounds like they're waiting for the "right" person to apply ...meaning someone's relative, who needs the job but doesn't necessarily have the best qualifications out of all the candidates. The last pick stiffed them and probably found something else with better pay and benefits and decided not to accept the job. Unless they've changed the job or posting number in any significant way, I'd start looking elsewhere if I were you!

it could have been filled. someone could have been told to hold off on filling it. it could be any of the reasons above. it could also be your process was under McCrory and now will be under Cooper - a change in parties at the governor level is always big, and even within the party the new governor gets some say-so in positions.

Yes, the change of administration is a big factor; nobody knows how the new Department Heads will handle staffing or are probably waiting for them to get in place in case they shake things up.

It can take MONTHS to get a response from the state of NC. It once took me almost 2 months just to move up in my very own work group with my same boss. You never know what bureaucratic hurdle at what step of the way is causing the delay.

If not chosen, you will eventually get a "thanks for applying" letter; until then, you can consider yourself still in the running.
