Can anybody give me feedback on state income tax, other taxes, housing costs, and general cost of living for the middle NC area - from Greensboro to Raleigh? I have been offered a position in Greensboro schools and am also sending in my app. to Wake County schools. I make a lot more up here in MI and see that areas like Burlington are supposedly $6000 cheaper to live in than where I am at currently. I'm just trying to get the most information I can so that I can make an informed decision about moving myself and my husband. We have relatives in the Greensboro area and have been able to get some good information from them. I guess I'm a little overwhelmed and looking for guidance as to whether this would be a good move or not. Thanks in advance!

Income - Depending upon your filing status and your taxable income, the North Carolina tax rate ranges from 6 to 8.25 percent.

Sales- The general rate of sales and use tax will decrease from 4.25% to 4% effective July 1, 2007. As a result, the combined State and local sales and use tax will decrease from 6.75% to 6.5% in all counties except Mecklenburg.

Property - Varies by county and city of residence.

Property tax is MUCH lower in NC, depending on where you are in Michigan and where you will be in NC.

If you are in Chelsea, MI, your property tax on a $300,000 home will be about $5,900 more in Michigan per year than in Asheville.

If you are in Jackson, it is about $5,300 more.

If you are in Howell, it is "only" $4,800 a year more than Asheville.

Those are the only comparisons I have done.

Sales tax in MI is 6%. After July 1, it will be 6.5% in NC - negligible difference.

State Income Tax in Michigan, as you know, is about 3.9% on $85,000 a year income. In NC, it is almost twice that.

Hope this helps.

I have compared Arizona, Michigan, NC, and Tennessee so far...

Moving is so complicated. Thanks for your input. Property tax sounds great! Income tax, on the other hand, kinda stinks.

Bottom line: State tax is 4.25% (dropping to 4% on July 1) and local tax is an additional 2.5%. If anyone is charging more than that, they are ripping you off.

Default MI vs. NC

As a former MI girl, heres my take. Cost of living, about the same, of course like Father John said, it also depends on where your coming from. Salaries are going to be much lower here. My brother is a teacher in Detroit area and my kids Assistant Principal doesn't make what he does. Obviously, the weather is nicer here in the winter, but it will still snow in Greensboro area, just gone much quicker. I think the biggest thing you will find here is that the schools are not nearly as progressive as they are in Michigan. My high school in MI had tennis courts, pools, several ball fields, football stadium, auditoriums, etc and that was 25 years ago. There is not one high school in my area that has that. Computers are limited, etc. NC is really behind in sooo many ways in education. Also overcrowding is a huge issue. I know of 3 people that came from MI to teach and were gone after the first year. Don't get me wrong, there are great schools here, just not like almost all schools in MI.
