There will be a warm spell from now until about mid January, with temps above normal 1-15 degrees. After that however, there is indication of a serious downturn in temps, which will give a below normal temperature profile for the month of January.

Temps may not even make it above 0F degrees for many consecutive days.
25% chance this won't happen.
25% chance it may be even worse.

So? It's winter.
In North Dakota.

The above is nothing unusual...

I'm not seeing any impressvie Cross-polar flow arctic outbreaks on the horizon per the GFS computer model. Basically a "blocking pattern" with a high pressure area in the western US or just off the Pacific would have to stay in place for a long period of time leading to arctic air from Siberia to flow over the pole into Canada and down into the Northern Plains. What I'm seeing now is more of an average blend of cold air, nothing at all unusual given the time of year and the averages for the region.

No, no, no, no. You only get so many of those each year. Last summer, ND used up more than their fair shair. It takes several below zero days in order to reset the counter. Besides, 78 degree days kind of makes ice fishing a little tricky.

Ok no 78 degree days, but a nice steaming 41 with some rain to help melt all the white crap.

Snow is much brighter and nicer to look at than drab ground. Try spending some time further South in winter where all they have are days of 35-40 with rain and clouds. I much prefer 20 with snow on the ground and some nordic sun.
