Survey:

Does the Scranton Times fairly report news so that the citizens of Scranton can make true informed decisions?
Would Scranton be better informed if there was a 2nd newspaper in town?

Competition is always good. Wilkes-Barre is a two newspaper town, and it shows in the quality of thier work. Both W-B papers consistantly win national awards, and are always trying to "one up" one another, which means the consumer wins. You don't get the biased, tilted, lazy coverage that you often find in the Scranton newspaper, because our newspapers can't afford to be biased or lazy...because the costumer will simply start reading the competition! I think competition drives better performance. Sadly, W-B is a rare exception in that it is a two newspaper town (especially for it's size). I don't see Scranton becoming a two newspaper town anytime soon.

There is a second newspaper in town...The Times Leader now has a Scranton edition....the Sunday edition of the TL has been showing up at my house for free for the past month or so.

Anyone who's been in this area for a while knows to take the Times-Tribune's reporting with a grain of salt, especially when it comes to stories on local politics. It's Chris Doherty's house organ.

Hopefully the Times Leader will advertise their availability.. it isnt well known that they have a Scranton edition... Maybe they could run a week or two of full page ads in "The Scranton Times"

Yeah but Times Leader barely has a toe hold up there. They are hardly competition for the Scranton Times up there. It isn't like in W-B where we have two well established newspapers duking it out daily.

But one of those well-established newspapers now belongs to the Scranton Times. Wouldn't it be fun to see the competition extend into Lackawanna County?

The Times Leader is making quiet inroads. Rather than jump in with both feet and make a big splash, the TL is trying to get Scrantonians used to another POV, something they haven't seen in a while.

Three years ago the TL ran an ad campaign - What's in it for you? - and the first billboards they put up were in the Scranton area, along 81 and the CSE. I believe the weekly Scranton edition is a continuation of that campaign.

No insider information, just my best guess.

Actually, the Scranton edition is a daily....but they have been delivering the Sunday Scranton edition to houses in the area for free.

Even in W-B, I'd much rather the Times Leader over the Citizens' Voice....you can still see the slanted Lynett political slop even in the CV. The TL is a much more obejective paper, not joined at the hip with the political machine. Its kind of ironic that the Lynetts have a paper called the Citizens Voice....any publication of theirs is hardly a voice of the citizens.

Nowadays the Times Leader is calling their Sunday paper in Scranton "Go Lackawanna". The paper only comes out on Sunday but they update their website more often than the Times Tribune does. Go figure.

Scranton has tried to be a multi-paper town in the past. It hasn't worked.

Go Lackawanna will probably fade away soon. The problem with the Go Lackawanna/Scranton edition ventures is that the TL put them in the hands of editors/reporters with little education, experience and journalistic knowledge. Add that to the fact that they are just a weekly now, and it's easy to see failure in the paper's future. Scranton already has Electric City.
