A friend is coming to visit in a few days, and I am wondering what is the fastest, safest and best way to drive from Brooklyn (not far from Eastern Parkway) to say Honesdale, Narrowsburg or Callicoon (NY).

Any suggestions?

you have to get to the new york state thruway. you could take eastern parkway to interboro pkway to whitestone expressway , take the whitestone bridge to the hutchinson to the cross county pkway to the sprain. parkway.

sprain to 287 to the thruway. get off exit 16 harriman and take route 17 to i-84. i-84 goes right in to nepa

Optionally, you could cross the Manhattan Bridge, cross Canal, take the Holland Tunnel to US 1/9, etc., then to I-280 North, to I-80 west to I-380 north to Scranton; might be shorter, quicker allowing for traffic/time-of-day.....both of which more heavily factor into the route northward to the Thruway and Rte 17, etc.......

Thanks, WasPA, and mathjak107.

It may took her awhile the first time out, but she'll be leaving Brooklyn early on Friday next, and hopefully the way we talked about will work (something between your suggestion, mathjak107 and my intuition).

I think going through Brooklyn to Manhattan and then the Holland can be a nightmare, and I strongly suggested an access other than Manhattan out of Brooklyn, like the interboro. I drove every other Friday from Brooklyn to the Penn Station area, and if I was lucky, 20 minutes; if anything went wrong, it could take 45 minutes.

I'll let you know how long it actually takes.

the Martz bus from Port Authority? LOL - that was when I used to come home from Kings County Hospital Center School of Nursing. Took the #3 IRT into Manhattan and caught the 130pm bus to Scra-in (if I had a date ). Sadly, neither exists anymore and I'd never go to the Port Authority alone these days.

Actually there is a bus that comes into Monticello, but this friend wishes to drive, and frankly I'd prefer her driving than my picking her up and then re-depositing her at the station.
