I have a fairly small (4 x 5) patch in a ceiling to be done. I'm wondering what a fair price would be to pay someone to hang and finish sheetrock in that area.

Hang and finish with no paint. And the contractor provides all the supply's??

1) A handy man looking to make a quick buck.... $125.00 to $150.00

2) A contractor that owns his biz..... $250.00 to $375.00

PS.. Them prices would only be fair if you already have Sheetrock not plaster!!

WOW. I'm flabbergasted. Cause a piece of sheetrock costs what...$15.00 tops? Spackle/joint tape, add in...another 10 or 15 dollars? Let's say, $30 for materials? The rest is labor? NOT that they're not worth it--construction guys, handypersons, and the like...all do things I (and many others) certainly cannot do. But...if the rest is then labor, they're making...how much per hour? Maybe I should think about just getting it replastered/patched? (original ceiling finish). Would that be less expensive?

Ok like me break it down for ya!!

1) gas to come to your house and give you a price. Let's say.. 5 bucks

2) about an hour to talk things over with you on what you need done. Let's say 20 bucks.

3) have to write up an estimate. "paper, ink, time, ext..." lets say another 20 bucks

4) run to Lowe's for materials, gas, time, ext..... another 20 bucks.

5) bring all tool's to the job "that you don't have" and could cost you a easy 200.00 to buy. Get started hang the drywall first coat. 'half of day" 50 bucks..

6) return the next day. put 2nd coat of Spackle on. don't forget gas... for all these trips!! Let's say 30 bucks.

7) return again!! 3rd coat of Spackle. GAS again!! time!! another 30
bucks!!

And last but not least the part we all love!! Sanding!! as so the customer get's mad because all the dust fly's all over his or her house!! Another 30 bucks, and gas and clean up!!

So YES!! you do the math!! No one would do a job like that for less then 200.00 it's just not worth the time!!

i once had a service call to fix a very complex machine . i got there, took my hammer, whacked a part 3x and everything was fine.

i charged 250 bucks.

the customer wanted an itemized bill.

labor and travel time 100.00

3 whacks with the hammer, 5 bucks each whack

knowing where to whack with the hammer 135.00

its all about paying for someones skill , not so much what they actually do...thats why specialists get sooooooooooooooo much.

I agree with John. But he forgot to include the insurance the contractor or handyman has to have. Plus Hanging sheetrock, and then sanding and spackling is not easy, is very time consuming and must be done right or you will have a mess on your hands. It is very specialized. I have seen what happens when you get the wrong person to do it. If it is on the ceiling he either has to have special equipment to hold the sheet rock in place or he needs to pay someone to come in and hold it up. It isnt easy work.

The thing about a patch work on sheetrock is that it is very very hard to make it look “seamless” in other words, your ceiling has to be all painted the same again and if it is a long ceiling it can get expensive. The feathering aspect is tough and can leave your ceiling looking patched. See sheetrock itself has a natural slight texture to it. When you sand spackle it becomes super smooth. After you paint you will notice the difference especially when light hits it. I recommend a technique when painting to “roughen” up the sanded spackle. Use a rough nap roller to go over the patch when the paint has had about 30 to 40 min to set up. This will draw the paint upward away from the spackle and get rid of that sheen.

The patch, spackle, sanding, paint should take aprox 3 to 4 days (not all 8 hour days.. but you need to let the spackle dry) and should cost you aprox 400.00 depending on the area needing paint.

just because the area is small, it doesnt mean the patch will be, you need to cut the damaged area back to the next good joist. If the damaged area spans two you may have quite a larger area.. it all depends on what there is to screw to once you open the ceiling up.
I would say 150 to 200 on the lower end of the estimates...and thats with the owner painting their own ceiling over
