Hi,

My husband and I will be relocating to NE PA because he is accepting a position at the Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant. We currently live in Southern California and we are very excited for the change in scenery.

We just spent 3 days in the area trying to narrow down a place to live, which has to be within an hours drive from Berwick. It was suggested for us to look in Mountain Top. We absolutely loved the neighborhoods we saw and from what I read online the school district looks good. We have an upcoming kindergartener and 2nd grader I also will be leaving my teaching position here in CA, to be a stay at home mom, and the schools are a very important decision. As I would love to volunteer and maybe teach again one day This decision is extremely hard to make without knowing anyone and having to rely on the internet. So I am curious what fellow posters have to say about the schools and area. Also, does anyone have any advice on the two elem. schools? Rice or Fairview? The test scores and student population looked similar.

The school will determine which part of town we choose to live in, however, the rentals are scarce (only 2 houses right now Any advice on finding one? We have been checking craigs list and Zillow..ect We might just try to buy a house before we move mid-August. We are planning one more visit to find a rental or house to buy. So maybe there are more towns we need to investigate more besides Mtn Top. I thank you for any words of advice, opinions, and recommendations you may have for us as we embark on this new adventure in our lives.

Thank you,
Michele

Mountain Top and the Back Mountain (Dallas Area) are the two most popular areas in Luzerne County for new transplants due to their above-average public schools and newer homes in subdivisions.

You may want to check out the Mountain Top Welcome Club, which acclimates newcomers to the area:

Have you considered Bloomsburg, which is quite a bit closer to Salem Township where the power plant is located? The town of Bloomsburg (it is officially classified as a "town") has a mix of working class stiffs and high achieving professionals from Bloomsburg University and the Geisinger Medical campus in nearby Danville. Bloomsburg and Central Columbia schools are OK.

Bloomsburg has a vibrant downtown with lots of shops, restaurants and watering holes. Plenty of good quality rentals available, too. If you're into arts and culture, there is a semi-professional theater company and the college brings in a good venue of performances. You are also not too far away from Bucknell University with its Weis Center for the Performing Arts, without doubt the best theatrical showplace in NEPA.

Good luck on your relocation.
