Hello, my family currently live in Long island N.Y.. Considering moving to PA, because its alot cheaper. We have 3 kids 7,12 and 17. We are looking for a 4 bedroom house not apartment. Can anyone advise me of a good location to consider. I have heard so much negative things where drugs and the low rating schools in the neighborhoods. Can anyone tell me of the areas to consider and the ones to leave alone. I will really appreciate.
Thanks Dee.

You still have to be more specific. Do you plan to commute back to the City? If so; you would want to be closer. We presume that you do because you are posting on the NEPA forum; but that is not always the case.

Here is a good link that our Moderator has locked as a "Sticky" on our Lehigh Valley forum; but the same information is helpful for the NEPA forum: Help for new and potential residents.

The checklist in Lehigh Valeyy is a good one. Here is ann even simpler one to start. Some "big" items that often come up (in my selection priority ...the order they can affect search/choice/feasibility) are:

  • High: Budget, commute, job situation
  • Medium: schools, safety
  • Low: recreation/hobbies/interests, shopping, dining, community, etc.

There are of course many more as you get more granular. Everyone's order would not be the same. It's a start.

BTW, if you haven't done this yet, really skim this forum. There are similar questions often and they will give you more background. The answers don't change frequently so info that's a few years old is still good input.

keep in mind that a lower cost of living also means a lower income. It's doubtful you'll find a job that pays as much as you'd make on LI.

Another thing to look into.
