OK I am still on my search for a rental. School district isn't a big deal since we are leaving by the time the kids will be going into 1st grade. I found a goods priced town home in Mount Pocono. I know a lot of areas of the poconos are bad in crime, but how is that area? I also found a town Blakeslee.. Any positive feedback on it? Thanks everyone!

No matter where you buy or rent; one bad neighbor can give you a lifetime of headaches. Are the townhouses on both sides of your perspective new property currently owned? Have you met your new-to-be neighbors? If you haven't met them; perhaps it is time to try to meet them? You might like what they say or might not want them for neighbors. It is better to find out before you buy than after you buy. Be leery of units not currently owned or rented along side of your new property; they could be taken over by somebody you do not want for any neighbor.

We have many foreclosed properties in the Poconos. You really do not want one of these properties along side of you. They can invite the wrong element. It doesn't always happen; but you want to protect your investment. When it comes time to sell; things like this can hurt your resell value - none of us likes to loose money. We also want a safe environment.

What I said here can go for anyplace in the whole Country. It is not exclusive to our area.

Mt. Pocono isn't too bad crime wise, some parts of town are nice, and other parts are seedy and run down. The problem is it borders neighboring Tobyhanna and Pocono Country Place , which were notorious for crime in the Poconos even now with gangs and drug trafficking. To be honest I don't think these areas are really bad for people to live in , but definitely use discretion.A lot of homes up there are targets for burglaries, and a lot of drug addicts prey on people at Wal-Mart and other shopping areas up in that town.Good luck with your decision.

As far as shopping in Mt. Pocono; I prefer it to going south (Tannersville, Bartonville and Stroudsburg). All you need is one good accident on I-80 and traffic goes grid lock in Tannersville. I can get up to Mt. Pocono easily from Swiftwater and I have never had any problems shopping at Shoprite, Wal-Mart or Lowes. I am 69 and have never had problems in my County - with the exception of three cases of retail theft when I had my own business in Stroudsburg. Anyplace in the Country could have had the same problems.

But the best advice is to do your homework. Nobody should buy or rent sight unseen. In most cases the neighbors will make or break your property. It is in the best interest of anybody, spending the kind of money needed to buy or rent, to take the time to meet your new neighbors - or at least meet somebody in your 'new' neighborhood that can give you first hand information.

It is one thing to look at pictures taken by the relator of the best possible views of any property; it is another thing to actually see and meet your new home and neighborhood. I cannot tell any prospective home owner that they will make the right or wrong deal even when I only live six miles away.
