This is true to a point. When I first moved here to NEPA I lived in the Hideout and didn't have a problem. It was a bit of a culture shock at first, but I adjusted. I moved to Scranton for the wrong reasons six years ago, which I won't get into here, so I really never truly wanted to be here. It's basically just a stop gap for me. My complaints about Scranton are my own. I would never insult you or anyone else about living here. Or discourage people to move here for that matter. I'm just telling my experiences in this city over the last six and my reasons for wanting to leave. I don't mean to insult long time residents, because it is home to you, it's just not my cup of tea.

FightinPhils, I thought you were originally from the mid-valley, Archbald area. You could say you have no real ties to Scranton. If you're talking about the area as a whole, then I can see your point.

You're right, I am originally from the MId-Valley....but even growing up there, people identify with Scranton. This area as a whole is home...not just the city of Scranton. I'm only living about 8 miles from where I grew up and most of my extended family lives.

Oh OK. I didn't grow up in this area, but I can understand what you're talking about. I worked at Sugerman's for the last three years of it's existence and everyone in this area, including Scranton, would tell me how they would "go up da Eynon" and get a great deal on a washer or about getting all of their fishing supplies there. It was in Eynon, but truly a Scranton "area" store. I miss that old store as many others do. I wish they could have found a way to keep it open or sell it to someone who would have kept it open. The flea market that is there now just isn't the same.

Ditto for me. I'm a lifelong resident of Pittston, but we too identify ourselves very closely with Scranton (and to a lesser extent Wilkes-Barre at times when it becomes advantageous for us to do so).

The thing alot of people don't realize is this area is down a notch in the property ladder and once your here its very hard to raise the capital to move back out. Once you cash out of New York / New Jersey there really is no going back.

You're very right. Once you're here it's very hard to go back, unless you win the lottery or get a big inheritance from a family member you never knew you had.

I'm around the corner from that block. Honestly that seems to me what most of Scranton looks like, a mixture of nicely kept and run-down houses both on the same block, and not so many large areas of one or the other. I think that's a plus in a lot of ways to not be nearly as economically segregated as most other cities. I'm sure it's still hard to have seen your immediate neighborhood decline with the rest of the city nonetheless.

NYRangers, I can't imagine wanting to move to LI from here. Go figure.
