It's really spectacular when they're linked up. Can see them with the naked eye, weather permitting, but you also should be able to see them in better detail with a decent telescope or good binoculars.

Check here for opportunities in your area. Human Space Flight (HSF) - Orbital Tracking

Here is a neat way to see real time locations of ISS and Shuttle and other bright satellites:

LIVE REAL TIME SATELLITE AND SPACE SHUTTLE TRACKING

Select the satellite view to make it look sort of real.

NASA also has a neat one called J track
J-Track Satellite Tracking (http://science.nasa.gov/Realtime/JTrack/ - broken link)

Default Seeing the ISS from California

Do you know if we will also be able to see the shuttle and ISS on those dates from California?

Check the second link in the OP. Will give you times, where to look, and how long it will last, from whatever city you're in.

Another good site for all things celestial is Heavens Above. You need to register, but it is free. I think one of the coolest things to see are the Iridium Flares. The Iridium satellites are communication satellites (think: satellite cell phones) with huge solar panels. They are REALLY bright. You can even see them in the daytime. You can input your location and it will give you the passes for various sites.

We saw the ISS 2 weeks ago in the sky....MAN!!! That thing MOVED!!!

We only had about 3 minutes "looking time" before it went outta sight!! (and we have what I call "big sky" down here...no mountains or tall buildings to obstruct view!!)
