Looks like the downtown isn't what its cracked up to be for business.....

Molly Branigans is struggling...WOW what a surprise. (http://scrantontimes.com/news/parking_authority_forgives_60k_rent_to_struggling_ restaurant - broken link)

This place recieved $650,000 from the city to open and know we are forgiving their back rent to the tune of $60,000.

Quote:
As long as the restaurant repays the electric bills, authority officials also agreed to forgive the three months of delinquent rent, bringing the total exemption to $60,225.
They can't even pay their electric bill, I give them till the end of the year and they will be gone. One year from now Kildares will follow.

Quote:
Business has been "very, very slow," with declines in both customer traffic and spending, Mr. McWilliams said.
There is no reason for people to go downtown to eat when there places all over the valley that they can shop and eat in the same area. Unless your in the market for baggie jeans and air jordans there is no reason to shop downtown.

The city will do whatever they can just to keep them in that location. If they leave, it will be a huge slap in the face of the administration and will clearly indicate that the downtown is waste of money and time when the rest of the city is collapsing around it. Not to mention it doesn't look to good for the 500 block if a chain restaurant can't make it work right across the street..........

SS Titanic...I mean Scranton heading for the bottom under the weight of record breaking debt and poor fiscal management.....

Doherty how are you going to run for Gov when you can't even keep your own city afloat.......

Quote:
Frank Tunis, secretary of the authority board, said sacrificing some revenue to help keep Molly Brannigans open was preferable to 7,000 square feet of vacant space.
There is little to no traffic in the downtown and the tax structure is crippling to a small business.

The hype has worn off and the place is just another downtown business that is struggling to survive in a ghost town. the food and atomspherre is not anything to write home about, so once you have been there, thats it.

Quote:
Mr. McWilliams said other Molly Brannigans locations in Erie, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg "seem to be holding up fine." When asked why the Scranton pub is suffering, Mr. McWilliams said he couldn't offer a reason.
OOOOH Please....Couldn't offer a reason, the downtown is as dead as Saddam Hussein and the future is about as bright as the bottom of a mine shaft.

ROFLMFAO......

You could have Lee Iacocca running the place and it wouldn't make one bit of a difference. There is NO CUSTOMER BASE to support business in the downtown.

Why am I the only one that sees this for what it is? Why am I the only one that doesn't make excuses for these places failing.

Pushing the failure on to the management is just a way of not blaming the admin for a poorly executed business plan for the downtown and for the city as a whole.

Stop making excuses and call it like it is. The downtown is dead everyday after 4:30pm and absolutely a ghost town on the weekends.

How exactly is it a waste? Nothing will get better if time and money is not put into it!

Dan, when will people realize what we have been saying for years, the downtown is a ghost town and bringing restaurants and trendy clubs will not boost it. I knew this was going to fail and Kildare's will too. They had a great location up on the mountain with a lot of other business up there with the shoppes and movie theater and they move downtown to nothing. People do not go to downtown Scranton like the mayor would have you think they would. There is nothing there except the dying mall, some restaurants and bars and the Hilton hotel. Once again, this is not Times Square, where there are people walking around at 11:00 at night. This is Scranton, where the downtown closes at 5:00. Doherty keeps pumping money down there waiting for a renaissance that will never happen, what a waste. He should be putting that money into public safety, rebuilding the neighborhoods and streets among other things.
