I wasn't alive in 1969 and didn't hear about this particular Ted Kennedy scandal (there have been a few) until I was out of school altogether, so I was unaware of the link until recently. Mary Jo Kopechne, the woman who died in Ted Kennedy's car at Chappaquiddick, was born in Forty Fort. Wikipedia says she was born in Wilkes-Barre. Here's a link all about her, her short life, and what happened on the night she died. Be sure to scroll all the way down on the page to read more:

Mary Jo Kopechne : Biography

I heard on the news yesterday that Ted Kennedy paid the Kopechne family $140K. He wrote a check for $90K and his insurance company paid the remainder. From that point, the Kopechne family is very quiet and not in the public view. When Obama visited the Pope earlier this year, he was asked by Kennedy, who had terminal brain cancer, to hand-deliver a letter from himself to the Pope. In the Kopechne matter, there has been much speculation about the letter's contents and whether a dark confession was contained therein. In my opinion, that's a personal issue between Kennedy and God, but it is interesting.

Interesting. I didn't know the details of this.....I went to the same (small) college she went to in NJ. You'd think I would have heard something about that fact there....

If her family kept quiet and did not pursue any further matters then really what could anyone have done? They accepted Kennedy's payoff. As for the confession - that is between him, the Pope and God and isn't really anyone else's business at this point in time.

Doesn't say too much for her family either, accepting a payoff for killing their daughter.

You have to wonder if there was some thuggery involved in making them keep quiet and take the money. It wouldn't surprise me, we are talking about powerful politicians here.

Maybe judgement shouldnt be passed on this. Afterall it happened many years ago and no one but the people involved know the truth.

This is like someone said on another post...You cant believe everything you read...it could be tainted by the newspaper.....

I believe the facts are that Ted Kennedy left a woman to drown! The family of the woman accepted a payoff to stay quiet and not pursue the issue. It's pretty much an ugly story all the way around. I don't understand the big hoopla about Ted's funeral. Put the guy in the ground and be done with it. But, I suppose the politically correct thing to do is to glorify this murderer before laying him to rest.

Because he did nothing at all in the 47 years he was in the Senate, right? I wish people would realize that you can be a person who does good AND bad things.
