I'm going to be visiting friends in Amsterdam soon. She is American (grew up in New England), he is Dutch, and they have two children ages 7 and 5. I'd like to bring them some gifts that are "from Virginia".

I thought of wine, but I'm not sure I can bring that on the plane (would rather not have it in cargo, if that's even allowed? And I know I can't bring it as a carry on as it exceeds the liquid limit)

Any other ideas of things from Virginia that would make a nice gift? Suggestions on local places to buy them are much appreciated too!

I'd say wine and peanuts. I don't know if you could bring any ham over. You could also ask what's hard to find over there (i.e. my friend in Austria complains about a lack of hot sauce).

A few different thoughts: Fox or horse items for the kids. Caps/t-shirts that say CIA. Costco sells honey made in Virginia, but that might not go over well with airport inspectors. Anything that says "Virginia is for Lovers." If they like politics, there are a few specialty stores that sell things like Obama bobbleheads. If they like sports, Redskins item bought from the Redskins store. Anyhing with a cherry blossom design.

Yeah, like Normie I'd get away from the food items and get them something that will last. How about a coffee table book with pics of the VA countryside? You might poke around for some things at the shops at the Mount Vernon estate. They have lots of VA related stuff there.

Try either Very Virginia in Leesburg (109 South King St.) or The Virginia Shop in Old Town (104 Union St.).

Yes, Mount Vernon has a large gift shop with many Virginia and colonial themed gifts. You can go to the gift shop without having to pay admission for the tour.

The ridiculous looking state flag? It's different from most at least. A flag for the wall would be kinda cool.

Or an afhgan from your community. Many chamber of commerces have items promoting the community. Afghans are fairly common (or at least they used to be).
