You can just mail it too, don't have to go to a local DMV.

Check their website, I think you need to fill up a form and send it along with your tag.

There has to be more than six months left on the tags and you have to fill out a refund application.

Would it not be easier to put the registration sticker on the inside front window of the car (you know, like almost every other state in the union does) and the plates go with the car? They do that in Texas to the west coast. Plates go with the car and the registration does as well. No collecting plates and no ripping of this and that. When the car is sold, the amount left in registration and inspection are factored into the sales price. Title signed over and the change is on the buyers side to get the car and title and registered in 30 days or less. Very simple. Seems like VA is behind the times.

they have tags that allow you to move the car one day only. temp tags so a buyer can move the car elsewhere and register it under their name without you having to give them your plates and hope they mail them back.

Great method and makes too much sense for VA.

If they did this, they wouldn't be able to hammer us on personal property taxes on the vehicles. Or they would, but it would be too confusing.

I saw one of the coolest vanity plates yesterday, on a Tesla Model S driving down Route 50 in Arlington: WATT EV.

I think this meets all the criteria for a cool vanity plate: 1. contains a pun, 2. relates to the car, and 3. is not an inside joke but is understandable to other drivers--without being something totally obvious.

No it doesn't.

The personal property tax is levied by the localities...not the State of Va.
As a matter of fact, the State of Va provides relief from the personal property tax.
