Hello,

I'm interviewing for a job in Fairfax,VA. I have researched housing/apartment costs in Fairfax and it is absolutely ridiculous. So, are there any affordable areas within a 45 minute commute of Fairfax, VA? Thanks.

Define what you consider to be affordable and what sort of housing you're looking for (i.e. a one-bedroom apartment, a single-family homes, etc.) and that can help us steer you towards a proper location.

I would be looking for a 1 maybe 2 bedroom apartment with rent in the $400-$750 range.

Well, unfortunately finding an apartment in that range I would say is almost downright impossible in Northern Virginia, especially within a 45 minute commute to Fairfax. The cheapest one bedrooms I've seen in Fairfax County, Arlington and Alexandria, go for $900 and those aren't exactly in the nicest of areas. In parts of Prince William County, around Woodbridge and Dale City, I've heard of apartments going for around $850 and most likely there's some closer to the $800 range, but I'd be wary of apartments in that price range to be honest. Two bedrooms are just out of the question. Now, for that price you COULD rent out a room in someone's home; maybe even an entire basement in someone's townhouse with it's own entrance, within 45 minutes of Fairfax fairly easily.

I live in Northern VA and can tell you that most of the apartments under $1000 a month are basically designed for immigrants. If that is you, great, welcome to America. If you do not want to be minority, then pay more and get a second job. Many people around here get a second job to make it financially.

My goodness, I didn't realize NOVA had appartments DESIGNED for immigrants. In what way are they different from apartments designed for WASPS?

I live in Fairfax County and rent for a one bedroom starts at 1100/mo.
You're best bet is to try craigslist, roommates.com to find people renting out basements or rooms. There are a lot of people who are renting rooms out in nice town homes for 600 to 1000 per month.

I work in Fairfax and live in Western Prince William County in Bristow,VA. My commute is 30 minutes door to door. I work in Chantilly to be exact. I use to work in Fair Oaks and that was a 30 minute commute as well from my community.

I think you will have to clarify that question. If it is, "What are family friendly areas in the DC area", you're question is too broad.
