The way I understand it, if you have the clean fuel symbol on the left side of your license plate, you can drive alone in a hybrid vehicle on both 66 and 395 HOV. But if the clean fuel symbol is on the right side of your license plate, you can only drive alone in a hybrid on 66, not 395.

Yamota- There are currently 2 different clean fuel plates. Cars with the White tag can be used on 95/395 HOV. They changed the tags to the current blue ones on July 1st 2006. All those with the white tags were grandfathered in on the 95/395 HOV lanes and can still use them....Hybrids with the blue plates cannot. From what I am reading, the newest 66 HOV extension, that was just signed, includes a new clause. All cars registered and tagged with clean fuel plates BEFORE July 1st 2011 can continue to use the 66 HOV lanes. All hybrids bought after June 30th 2011 cannot. I am guessing they will be changing the plates again this year?? The article doesnt say.

So, after June 30th, then only the vehicles that have been grandfathered in can ride in the HOV? If you buy a vehicle August 1st, for instance, then you will not be able to buy these special plates? Is that true?

Well, I guess that's one way to appease the people who are pissed at hybrids in the HOV

Yamota- I guess so. I am surprised the news and the dealerships havent been running with it.

Analyze- That is the way I am reading it. The news has not even mentioned it. I just happened to stumble across it the other day.

Just saw this on the news today. Guess it is true. If you dont buy a Hybrid by June 30th AND get the clean fuel tags, you are SOL. No extention for you. The dealerships are going to be asking thru the nose for them now! (like they werent already!)

Sure is nice that my clean diesel gets better gas mileage than almost every hybrid (save the smallest prius style hybrids) but is not allowed on the HOV lanes. I suppose I could trade it in on a Escalade Hybrid and be rollin on deuce deuces at 21 MPG. Makes sense to me.

Is the HOV lane on 267 not exempt as well? I've always assumed it was (and there's a huge number of cars with clean air plates in that lane during rush hour) but I don't see anything about 267 in the bill.
