Is it a crime here to smile at your neighbor, smile during an interview, smile during chitchat or smile in general? Seriously! My personality has always been to smile and be friendly but up here it seems like people think I am crazy if I show any type of emotion. Is it just my expereince or is it the area? I moved about a year ago and live in Arlington. I do love living here btw. Should I just be more reserved at first and then reveal my true personality later? lol I can't believe I am saying that but it's true.

From where did you move?
I was born and raised in NJ, and I love how friendly (including smiling!) people are here.

Smiling is now a problem? Is someone actually giving you a hard time about it?

I'm one of those people who *don't* walk around smiling. It's just because I'm usually deep in thought and so I look kind of serious. I'm constantly having people ask me why I'm not smiling. What's wrong. Stuff like that.

There's a man at my work who asks me why I'm not smiling everytime he walks by my desk. It drives me batty. Who sits at their desk all day with a perma-grin plastered to their face?
No one I know.

He is flirting.

To starlilly - smiling is never a bad thing. Keep doing it, even when others are not.

Thou shalt not smile! It's against the US law 18 USC §111. How could you have not known that?

Hey - I smile and say good morning to people at work....some respond....some are sour pusses. What's worse is I see the same people every day...the same ones are polite and the same one's aren't. And I love how I am going into the bathroom close behind someone - they'll turn around and look at me - and just let the door close....again, same ones. I don't know these folks - but common courtesy is nice sometimes.

It's the botox, they really are smiling you just can't tell...

In all seriousness it just depends on the person. There is one guy at work, that we've nicknamed Eeyore. He's a nice enough guy, but he's always just ho hum like his dog just died. On the flip side, there's another lady who's just the epitome of perkiness. She's always in a good mood and bringing in home made cookies/brownies into work. We've all joked that we want to drop by at her house on Christmas morning just to see if it's just like a Norman Rockwell painting.

I ride a motorbike and it's courtesy to wave at other riders. Some wave back, some don't. I don't spend too much time thinking about the ones that don't, I'm busy enjoying the ride.

I would never ask someone why they're not smiling, or say "Hey, Smile!" like some do, because you never know. They could have just been fired, had a death in the family, be going through depression, have a sick kid, you just don't know.
