I was told that there are some 6500 military coming into NoVa due to BRAC?

Is Reston typically a big spot for military families?

TIA!

Over 6,000 will be moving to the Mark Center area in Alexandria. I haven't heard about Reston.

Fairfax County eyes suit over BRAC

Edited to clarify that the Board of Supervisors decided NOT to sue -- the link was just to the title of the (older) article.

Reston's kind of far to attract too many military families, AFAIK. It's a really neat little town, though.

There have been several BRAC's, and many different aspects of BRAC. The one affecting our region right now is the relocation of DoD personnel (and contractors) away from leased space (such as in Crystal City and Rosslyn) to owned buildings or bases set back from roads and with restricted access.

The Mark Center near Seminary Rd and 395 is getting the most media coverage in our area. It's a newly-constructed building that will house around 6,000 employees who are currently working in other, mostly Arlington, locations.

I believe some departments may be moved to the Fort Belvoir base as was originally planned for those now headed for Mark Center. There may be some other locations, but I don't think any are near Reston.

Due to Fort Belvoir base picking up some of these personnel, it's possible that communities around Route 1, Telegraph Rd, Kingstowne, and vicinity see a rise in property values or increased rents.

It is bringing a lot of people to Stafford. There are many people coming to Quantico, because of BRAC. That is also bringing lots of private sector defense related jobs to N. Stafford as well. Stafford real estate is finally picking up, because of it. I've noticed much more interest in Stafford on city data lately.

Thanks. Because at the end of the first article there are some unfounded partisan allegations that Cong. Moran didn't take action until very recently, I am posting a link to his website detailing a long list of actions he has taken since DOD first made this decision re: BRAC. These are summarized in this post, with links:

BRAC | Congressman Jim Moran - Serving Virginia's 8th District (http://moran.house.gov/issues_brac.shtml - broken link)

The post and links also contain other factual info that may be of interest to people affected by the BRAC move.

Regarding Ft. Belvoir, the plan is for 14,000 civilian and military workers to move there by Sept. 15 this year. I'm sure this will increase traffic in the immediate vicinity of the base, but I hope it also increases property values in the area (although an influx of 14,000 people may not be big enough to do that).

Regarding Reston - yes, there will be folks moving out there in 2012 and right now there are a lot of folks already there. Alexandria is going to be hit HARD with added traffic there at Seminary Rd....

Adding to the problems on Seminary Road is the fact that there are virtually no infrastructure improvements planned to account for the ~4000 cards added to 395/Seminary Road.

I work in the Duke building at Mark Center...all I can say is I'm glad I live within walking distance

I just cannot fathom the military being able to move that many personnel in one cycle. Wow! We are military and moving but it isnt associated with any BRAC issues. I have zeroed in on Reston and am hoping that I wont have issues finding a nice rental property in a few months. I had this horrifying thought that it would be me versus 6000+ families looking for a home in Reston, LOL.
