What an ass. Hope they get to the bottom of this. You have to wonder how someone like that was reared, to end up doing such a thing. Was he the butt of jokes as a child? Was he behind in school? Was he canned from his job? Did he eat a rotten rump roast? I've got a haunch they'll solve this crime soon.

I'm at each mall at least 2x a month to walk.
FairOaks Mall has many many stay at home-muslim in hajib moms/korean moms/Asian India moms during the week days along with grandmas and other extended families. They seem to be upper middle class.
On Saturday nites it is run over by Teenagers. Maybe Goth kids are making you think barrio-lite?
Tysons is the same except lots more preppy polo wearing moms. I've always thought those hot pink sleeveless polo shirts with cute green palm prints are soooo ugly.
As for that horrible man; it makes me think how much he
hates beauty and innocence or he wouldn't be attacking teenage girls (I hate when its reported as mostly 'women'-these are mostly girls). Plus that knife could spread God Knows what since he makes the girls bleed by at least breaking the skin. Terrible!

Not even close. Springfield is the bottom of the ghetto. Fair Oaks is a complete culture shock compared, I'm there once or twice a month or so with my wife. On the flip side of that, i'll be the first one to say it - this fellow will take a knife to my wife once, and once only if I happen to be around. I guarantee you he won't do it again.

I agree and don't find anything even remotely humorous or titillating about this story. This is about one dangerous sociopath - not cultural decline, stereotypes, or easily dismissible sophomoric behavior.

OTOH if it were happening in DC, PG, or Alex or south arlington, would we just dismiss it as one sociopath? Or to put it differently - why do we see more sociopathic type crimes in the "safe areas"? Just that theres less for the media to report on there, or a real phenomenon?
or, to put it differently - we were in Troy for orientation and the RPI security was asked "what are the safe parts of Troy"? His response was he doesnt want to say, cause ANY place you walk around with your ipod on, not paying attention to your surroundings, is going to be dangerous. Its street smarts, not avoiding certain areas that keeps you safe. We know too many kids raised in "safe" parts of Fairfax county who walk around oblivious to their surroundings. Im not saying this would have helped in this case - but I think this confirms that you can't escape crime by your avoiding the "ghetto"
