Don't forget though, wherever the hurricane hits, or comes close to, you're very likely to lose electricity. I'm guessing in OC, all poles and lines are above ground and likely wooden. It'll take a day or two, at least, to get back up.

We just moved from New Orleans. Evacuations aren't always followed by an all clear, especially if the hurricane hits there.

Updated: 3:15 p.m. 8/25/11 .

Ocean City Emergency Management officials will initiate phase three of the hurricane action plan in preparation for Hurricane Irene. Phase three will go into effect at midnight tonight..

Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan has signed a proclamation declaring a local State of Emergency.

All persons other than identified emergency personnel are ordered to evacuate. Visitors are asked to return to their principle residences. Ocean City residents are asked to seek shelter elsewhere..

Utilizing the authority under a local State of Emergency, the Mayor is banning the sale of all alcohol in Ocean City and requests that all businesses close beginning at midnight..

All incoming traffic to Ocean City, Maryland, will be limited to emergency personnel. No other vehicles will be permitted entry to the island, except by approved authority (Mayor, City Manager and Emergency Services Director).

With all of the damage likely to happen, and the time it takes to clean it up, I would think the trip is not a good idea. But, what do I know?

I would cancel and head elsewhere.. not along the coast. The storm damage is going to be significant if it hits the way they are predicting. Power will still be out and many areas will have been flooded.

In my opinion, you have made a wise choice.

Yeah, I think OC might get hit as hard as anywhere on the eastern seaboard. Plus, it is on such a low and narrow spit of land that the chance of serious flooding is probably 100%.
