Hi All - my husband and I have a housewarming party planned in Leesburg for this Saturday beginning at 4pm through the evening. A few people (both locally and not) have already started to cancel due to Irene. What's your take on the weather situation? Do you think we should cancel? We scheduled this housewarming over a month ago so I would hate to reschedule but am worried that people will continue to cancel due to their weather fears and we would have no one at our party. Thoughts would be helpful! Thanks!!

Wait and see. There is a slight chance that the hurricane will miss us completely and we will have great weather this weekend.

On the other end, there is a slight chance that the hurricane will hit us directly and we will have flooding and high winds to deal with.

Likely something inbetween will happen, but don't forget that Leesburg is farther from the coast than DC so it won't be as bad.

The likely scenario is winds gusting 30-40 and heavy rain Saturday night. But Saturday afternoon won't be as bad.

If you cannot wait and see for a couple of days and need to make a decision today, then reschedule if you can because of the uncertainty and because others are canceling their plans.

Honestly, I don't think you will be hit that hard in Leesburg and the worst of it is *late* Saturday night into Sunday. I woudn't cancel at this point, but if people are already calling....

Never underestimate how bad people freak out around here.

Really. I agree. Do we need to add that to the "Things You Find Odd About NoVA" thread, or is it already on there?

Thanks for all of the advice so far - keep it coming!

I haven't discussed rescheduling with my husband yet but plan to after work today. My guess is he's going to think that these people that are canceling are a little too cautious and will want to proceed with having the party anyway. I just don't want to be left with a boat load of food/drinks if not as many people show up!

I've been watching the weather and it doesn't seem too bad - some rain and wind. But I wanted to confirm that in the event I missed something.

I wouldn't cancel. People may change their minds after they realize that they overreacted. I guess I wouldn't be too disappointed if some people cancelled. More good food for me.

I think you should cancel, yes. There's going to be a freaking hurricane!! Hello!! It won't be fun with a hurricane rattling outside knocking trees into cars and then you're responsible.
