Hi there...we're military about to be assigned to the Pentagon with an 11-year old child. First off, we understand it will be a 1-hr+ commute to work but we're wondering if traffic within Burke will be heavy as well (both during rush/non-rush hour)? Second question--our daughter's a pretty serious tennis player and we're wondering if the commute from Burke to a couple of the recommended tennis programs is manageable after school? The first center is Fairfax Racquet Club (59860 Lee Hwy) and the second is 4-Star Tennis Academy which has two locations (Merrifield at 3010 Williams Drive; Falls Church at 2230 George Marshall). Any idea how long the commutes would be to these three locations from Burke? Thanks so much!

It depends where in Burke you'll be commuting from and what time of the day you'll be driving from Burke to Fairfax/Merrifield/Falls Church. I regularly drive between Burke/Annandale and Merrifield/Falls Church in the late afternoon and it can vary from 25 minutes to 50 minutes or longer. (And that's without things like rain messing everything up.)

Thanks O'Fish. We haven't yet pinpointed a place in Burke so I'm really just looking for a rough estimate b/w Burke and Fairfax (Racquet Club) and the two locations you noted (Merrifield/Falls Church). Wow...25-50 minutes for those two is a bit longer than I would've thought--can you tell me ~where you are in Burke?

As for the time of day, the tennis programs are after school programs at ~4 or 4:30 start times. Anybody have estimates from Burke to Fairfax? Thanks all!

Oops...I had a type-o on the Fairfax Racquet Club address. It's 9860 Lee Hwy (not 59860). Looks like it's between the Army/Navy Club and GMU.

I'm in Annandale (near Burke) and have a child in FCPS between Braddock Rd/Little River Tpk (236) and regularly go to Merrifield (Williams Dr) for 5 pm. Traffic on Braddock Rd/236 and thoroughfares between these points can be tough, especially right after school lets out with Kiss 'n Ride and buses. Check to see schools' dismissal times before thinking about driving on these area roads an making a 4 pm start time. Personally I think 4 pm would be tough, but 4:30 pm might be doable if you time things absolutely perfectly.

I drive a school bus in Burke/Fairfax so I'm pretty familiar.

The Lee Hwy location is roughly across from Fairfax High School...the Merrifield one is close to Luther Jackson MS...and the Falls Church one is close to Marshall High School/Tyson's Corner (the furthest and probably worst trafficwise).

I'd say Fairfax and Merrifield would be under 30 minutes in normal conditions.

Post when when you know where in Burke you'll be....I'll hook you up with some of my back-streets and/or shortcuts.

Also, you might check with the tennis programs to see if they have any carpool lists. My kids are in after-school activities and we make use of carpools for a couple of them. (With kids doing different activities starting at similar times in different areas, carpools are frequently used by families.)

If you could take the HOV on 395 it should shave a lot of time on your commute, and exit 8B from the HOV lane gets right down to the Pentagon

We live off 123 and Burke Centre (technically Fairfax address, but really, it's Burke), and my DH commutes to Merrifield daily (50 and 495 intersection). It takes him on average 22 minutes, but never more than 30. He leaves here at 7:15, and heads home around 5:45. He avoids Braddock at all costs, as well as 50 though. There are several smaller roads that have virtually no traffic on them. All and all, it's a super great commute, for this area at least. Oh, and we can get to the Pentagon pretty quick from here too. Definetly less than an hour, even at 8am.
