Hi NOVA list readers,

We are relocating from VT and found a great house, but I'm concerned becasue my 2 elementary-school aged kids would be going to Bonnie Brae.

Based on the stuff I've read, seen, etc., it seems to be one of the weaker elementary schools. Also, my oldest is in the enrichment program up here and I would like a school that has something along those lines. It seems bonnie Brae doesn't?

Any advice or insights you have would be great!

Thanks so much!

If your daughter tests into the advanced academic program, she can go into that (3rd grade and above). If Bonnie Brae doesn't have the program, she would get assigned to a different school. It looks like Bonnie Brae goes to White Oaks. Here's some info. about the program: Advanced Academic Programs

Bonnie Brae is NOT a weaker elementary school. It is not as pristine white/middle class as some other schools, but it is close. It has a group of esl students that have brought down test scores in recent years, but overall it is completely middle-class and comparable to any of the other elementary schools in the area. Bonnie Brae is not a title I school, not a "failing" school, etc. We live in this district and I have no reservations about sending my child there. All our neighbors love it. There are some programs offered at other schools that students may transfer to if they get in - Gifted, Bilingual, and maybe others I don't know about, so if your child qualifies for something that is not offered then you can change schools, but might have to provide your own transportation.

I agree with Marie. I know many families with children there and they all speak very highly of the principal and teachers. If your child qualifies for the Gifted Center, the county will provide transportation. Our neighbor's child went to a Gifted Center at Oak View. But if you make it through the lottery into an language immersion program, you need to provide your own transportation.

You can find out a lot of information by looking at school profiles on the FCPS website.

It gets a '7' on Greatschools and has 19% free/reduced price lunch students. The 19% is about average for FCPS free/reduced lunch percentages. I'm not sure why you think this makes for a 'weaker' school.

This thread is a few years old but has some additional information about Bonnie Brae:

I would not sweat this for a second, but that's me.

Something recently is going on at Bonnie Brae that is bringing down the test scores. That's our neighborhood elementary school, but my kids are only 1 and 3. When we bought our house in 2010, we heard nothing but great things about that school. It was one of the reasons why we chose this house, in fact. There is more to a great school than test scores I've decided, b/c everyone around here LOVES that school.

It might not be anything at the school - there is a very small enclave of govt housing that - somewhat oddly - is included in Bonnie Brae's boundary. I don't know how recent that is, but maybe it represents a change.

Yes Maire - That's what I meant to say - not specifically something at the school. The school is great. Thanks for clarifying.
