My husband is getting transferred to Chantilly - it looks like we can't probably afford Vienna - and closer in areas since our cap is 500,000. Is there other places with a short commute to Chantilly with good schools, but more importantly great resale...since we'll probably have to move again in a few years. Thanks for the help!

Pretty much all the areas around Chantilly have good schools and about equal resale, Chantilly included. I read your past posts and saw that you will be commuting into DC which is the reason you were hoping to be as close to Metro as possible. Well, with that in mind, I would recommend checking out the parts of Chantilly that are closer to Fairfax for an easier commute. Real estate prices are coming down and there actually may be a good selection of homes under 500K. Greenbriar is one neighborhood to check out. It's older, but the homes are generally in decent condition, the neighborhood is safe, the schools are good and it's right by Chantilly. You might find a decent selection within the actual city of Fairfax as well. Some of the homes are a little shabby and some schools are better than others (but none are bad), which will even ease a commute more both into DC (closer to Vienna Metro) and out to Chantilly (reverse commute on Route 50).

I live in Kingstowne and it's a great area but I'd say live in Chantilly to avoid the commute; no point in living on one end of the county and commuting to the other when you can find similarly nice neighborhoods for similar prices.

Agreed. Commuting can be killer here. Don't volunteer for it. Life is so much easier when you can just pop into the office, then pop out again. Heck, go home for lunch. Make a sandwich...stretch out on the couch. You'll learn to live with it...
