Put a baby monitor in your car and sleep with it on. If you hear anything, run out there with a tire iron / bat with a nail in it.

As a cyclist, I find this question amusing.

Clearly you need quick release tires to make that effort easier.

Or a run a good u lock through your tire.

BTW, this is the first I've heard of this.

That would be a heck of a hefty U-lock. Good thing I have my trunk space to house all four of them.

How about parking your car in the garage, and if you don't have one then why not? Any "nice" area I have seen has houses with an attached garage.

At least you won't have to go uphill under your own power while carrying it.

Really? If your definition of nice is only houses built fairly recently then yeah. But there's tons of nice neighborhoods in Arlington, McLean, Falls Church, Vienna, etc that have older housing stock without garages.

Yeah, that was a silly comment.

I grew up thinking that all houses needed to have a 2-car garage, but from the time I left for college in 1997 with my beater Ford Explorer I have not parked in a garage a single night. Never once have I had a problem.

The best suggestion is to make your car visible. Park as close to a streetlight as makes sense, or if you are parking in your driveway, install some security lighting.

Does your friend live in a SFH, Apt/Condo or Townhouse? I'd imagine this kind of operation would be easier against SFH owners.

SFH - as I said, super nice neighborhood (and they have a beautiful home, beautiful landscaping, etc.).

As to the "number 55" comment - it was Fairfax County Police I believe (not sure if Annandale has their own? probably not) - they didn't ask for clarification of WHERE the areas were (I would assume it's Mason District that handles their area?), they were obviously upset - it's not on a main drag, you go back in through a residential area (Broyhill or Broycrest or something), neighbors all know each other, houses are very well-maintained...
