Does anybody know anything about a place called Salem Fields Townhomes in Spotsylvania? It's an area in Fredericksburg. Is that a nice area to live and raise children or is it more ghetto? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I actually don't like the community as a whole that much because of the way that the different house types are segrigated. It looks way too cookie-cutter and boring to me. The rest of the neighborhood is pretty nice over-all though, but the townhomes were a later addition, and are not that nice.

I've seen cars on blocks in the driveway, I've heard of a couple families living in one unit, they just plain look ugly (my opinion obviously), whenever I go through there there are always a lot of unsupervised kids running around in the street, and you have to wait for a basketball game or two to stop so you can continue your drive through.

You have to remember that around 3-4 years ago when these were built, they were the cheapest housing in the area, especially for new construction. Since then the market has crashed, and they have lost around 30% in value or more. (There is an upgraded end unit that sold for $325k four years ago, which is now on the market for $199k) Some things just go along with being the cheapest place to live in the area...

Now, I've been assuming this whole time that you were talking about the 3-level townhomes that you can own. On the other side of the development is an area of 2 level townhomes that you can rent. If you're talking about the rental townhomes, then I have no experience with them at all.

As far as i know, you rent these townhomes and i believe they're two story. So far, the reviews on them are not so good. There are other townhomes, England Run, and Timber Ridge. They all have mostly bad reviews. They are all almost $2000.00 to rent, but they accept subsidized housing. It unfortunately seems that any housing community that accepts subsidized housing are not such good places to live. This is ridiculous. I wish i could find a nice place to live and not have to be rich to live there. Thanks for your honest response.

Well, my responses have been about the 3 story townhome section on the other end of the community. The 2 story ones that you can rent I have no clue about. I know that you can basically walk to a good elementary and middle school from them though, and if you drive a little west on Gordon Rd, there's a lake where you can rent fishing boats.

Good luck. You might even be able to find a house in your price range. $2,000 is crazy, since you can buy a large townhome for like $170k (even with 100% financing, that's only around $1400/month if you can get the financing...)

For what it's worth don't take the Internet reviews you'll find as being "gospel." I reside in a complex in Reston that received AWFUL reviews GALORE, and yet I still chose to rent here because I was able to obtain a large square footage (960 square feet) for a 1-BR at a price comparable to smaller units in the area AND am in a very convenient location. My complex has some issues, but it is nowhere nearly as horrific as what the naysayers were ranting about online. Why not go there yourself and chit-chat with the residents about how they like living there? I'd be DELIGHTED if someone came over to ask me about potentially moving here, but alas I get no visitors!

Thanks! I really lucked out. I'm not a huge fan of Reston and the almost creepy political "sub-factions" that some of the residents seem to thrive off of with power trips (i.e. this stupid "Taj Mahal Rec Center issue that nobody really gives a damn about,") but the location just couldn't be beat---a golf course to my rear and the town center to the front.

Thanks for your responses. I will ask a friend who lives in North Stafford to take a drive through the neighborhood on a saturday evening and check it out for me. I am in Pennsylvania and will be relocating there if all goes well.
