My biggest concern is more the mega-church thing. I grew up in a church like that and it is sometimes hard to feel a part of the "church family" when there are thousands of people.

We'll see. I am keep my ears open!
Thanks again!
Have you tried the United Church of Christ? That might be a good be a good fit for you - United Church of Christ. Disclaimer - I don't go to a UCC church myself, but have friends who do and value it. Specifically, they go to Lovettsville Saint James United Church of Christ in Loudoun, if memory serves.

Default So now this is funny

Um, ha ha ha ... I just emailed my friend (remember, hasn't been in VA for many years) and this is what she said. Before you read this, I really think she used to talk about the radio spots and in my distant memory maybe I thought she had gone to the church. Anyhow ...

"I never went to the McClean Bible Church. I think that you are thinking of [someone we both knew]. Wasn't that his church? I used to go to the First Baptist Church in Arlington off of Wilson Blvd. and before that, I went to Casa del Pueblo United Methodist Church near 16th St and Columbia Rd. in Washington, DC. The First Baptist Church in Arlington used to have service in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Korean. They had individual language services and then once a month they had joint service where everything is translated. [My friend] really liked the Spanish pastor. I really liked Pastor Paul Lee (from Tennessee). He used to play the piano and sing during service. I liked his singing a lot, and he had really well thought out sermons that were informative."

She did go on to mention that more recently when she was visiting, one of the pastors had changed, not that this was specifically bad, and that the area (Clarendon/Arlington) had changed. Again, not bad, just different.

The Unitarian church in Sterling fits your description. Or, if you're looking for something more conservative, McLean Bible Church is certainly popular. The catholic church on Algonkian PArkway in the Cascades area is huge and has a dynamic, diverse congregation. There's a fantastic Episcopalian church in Reston--I think it's called St. Anne. It's near the corner of reston Parkway and Baron Cameron. Actually, all the churches in Reston attract a diverse crowd. Good luck, and welcome to Virginia.
