We have been on 3 daycare waitlists since May and it does not look like we will have a spot available by March/April. Can anyone recommend a daycare in Herndon, Reston, or Eastern Loudoun (Sterling, Ashburn, the area around Dulles airport)?

We ended up going the home daycare route. It's more work in that you really have to check into who you're working with, but I personally found a home environment preferable to that of any of the many daycare centers I toured. I live in Sterling and toured the Children of America, Augusta School, and a couple others with never a single warm fuzzy. My home daycare provider is more than $100 less per week, only watches 3-4 children at a time, has a bachelor's degree, speaks clear/fluent English (the only language we speak at home), and offers a lot of personal communications (she sometimes texts me photos of my son during the work day, always keeps me posted on how he's eating, etc.).

How old is your child?

I heard good things about Goddard in Ashuburn and The Boyd School in both Herndon and Ashburn.

Circumstances change quickly in the daycare centers, so I wouldn't necessarily assume yet that you won't have a spot in one of the centers for which you are already waiting. Within a few days of being told that there probably wouldn't be a spot available for six months in the infant room at my first choice center, I got a call - literally on my last day of maternity leave - saying that one had opened up and would be available immediately.

Keep in mind that most people are on multiple lists, so people ahead of you may end up somewhere else. People transfer in and out of the centers frequently for various reasons (this area is transient in general). Maybe the people ahead of you on the list haven't had their baby yet so won't be ready for the spot at the time it comes open.

However, I understand the desire to have backup plans as well. I only looked at a few so these aren't recommendations, but just places to research...

Goddard School
Robert E. Simon Center
Winwood
KinderCare

I believe all but Simon Center have multiple locations in the areas you listed. (Simon Center is near the police station in Reston.)

Congrats on the new baby and good luck!

Hopefully your screen name isn't indicative of who you'll choose. I don't have kids, but I hear this is one selection you don't take lightly.

Honestly I don't recommend any center until the child is at least 2. Find a nice in-home person with a few kids. You baby will get more attention and get less sick. I believe it or not found an amazing sitter for my baby on craigslist. GL

I do not have any kids but thinking about it in the next couple of years. I am afraid to ask-what is the cost of daycare? I am guessing this ranges based on age? Any clue on estimates? Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Tuition for the Boyd School. They are on the high side, but not the most expensive in this area.
