Actually most of the Fairfax County middle schools have no sports programs (not sure if any of them do, in fact). The high schools all do, of course, but in middle school the kids who do sports have to do it in county/city/whatever leagues. Some of the middle schools have loosely organized after-school sports programs but they don't compete against each other in an organized fashion like the high school teams do.

So Prince William would be the option over Fairfax for school sports activities at the middle/junior high school level?

Fairfax has some 7-12 schools and I guess I assumed those schools offered a sports program for all grades.

I don't believe that they do. I think the sports teams are open only to grades 9-12.

If it were me, I don't think I'd put much weight on middle school sports when making a decision on where to live. Not when there are so many sports leagues open to middle schoolers. When your kid is in a league, they're obviously going to be placed on a team. In school sports, there's no guarantee. It would really suck to make a decision on where you live based on middle school sports and then find that your kid doesn't make the team, you know what I mean? I'm not downplaying the importance of sports in kids' lives at all. Two of my four kids are/were very athletic and sports were very important to them. But not having middle school teams to compete on didn't hamper their ability to participate in sports while in middle school. They just did league sports instead of school sports.

Agree with Victorhead. THere are only so many spots on a school team anyway. 250 kids tried out for basketball last year at my son's school for something like 12 spots

My main focus is a good high school for my son both academically and for soccer. I am just interested in keeping my two younger sons into wrestling becasue they love it and are fairly good at the sport. Due to the lack of youth programs aside from dual teams was my reasoning for asking about the availability at the middle school level. With wrestling being a smaller sport im not too concerned with the amount of kids trying out for that team.

I'll put another plug for Northern Virginia Wrestling Federation

Here you will find all the off-season teams in the area. We usually travel to at least one invitational or open tournament a month. Scholastic season runs December - February. Many Prince William middle schools have very good wrestling programs, the better ones being Stonewall Jackson, Manassas Park, Gainesville, and Marsteller.
