My son may have an opportunity to live in the Ashburn, Va area (due to a possible job relocation). Is this a safe area? What other areas are good to live (apartment) within a 30 minute commute to Ashburn? Thanks a lot! This is a total new area for us.

yes, it is EXTREMELY safe, but not so exciting for a single in their 20s. It's geared towards families. Depending on where in Ashburn (I'm going to guess working for Verizon) and rental budget, I would suggest downtown Leesburg (cheaper) or Reston Town Center (reverse commute) for a single working in Ashburn.

I agree with spencgr, but to make specific recommendations we will really need to know your son's housing budget. Best bet is probably finding a roommate and living in Reston Town Center.

This. Ashburn is completely safe, but very family-oriented. Try the Reston Town Center area - decent commute, and there is more to do.

Ashburn is great! I lived where while in my 20s and really enjoyed it. If he's looking for some place with more to do, Reston is a great place as well, but on the more expensive side. As far as the most inexpensive, I'd look into Leesburg. I loved living there.

I lived in Ashburn for a year, a year ago. Alone, single women, 23 years old at the time. I never felt unsafe at all, and I run a lot and that included running in the early morning and at dusk and I never worried. I was certainly bored there though! But never felt unsafe. Definitely check into Reston.

Safe = Yes. Boring for a 20-something = Yes

I agree with the others. Have him check out Reston!

Ashburn is one of the safest places in NoVa. Zip code 20148 is newer than 20147 side of it.

It's mainly good for families. For 20's, if he is an outdoor person, it may be good for running/cycling etc. But finding friends in a similar boat may be difficult in Ashburn.

Whereas Reston is a much better option for a guy in 20's. He can find friends in similar age, it's reverse commute etc.

Oh please don't waste your 20s in Ashburn. I recommend going somewhere exciting like SF (or NYC), work at a startup for 80 hours a week, sleep in your car or on the streets (SF).
