This is inside the beltway so it doesn't quite meet your specs, but I would suggest looking at Old Town Alexandria. It is rich with history and very pedestrian friendly.

Leesburg, Purcellville, Berryville (off of Route 7 on your way to Winchester and boasts quite a few restaurants for such a small town!), Aldie (has a mill and some quaint shops), Middleburg (LOVE this little place), Upperville (it's a nice drive through area), Paris (not much there but a nice restaurant and antique shop), The Plains (some neat shops, a tea room and some restaurants), Fredericksburg is neat too. Just get on Route 66, 7 or 50 and drive. Get off on some exits and lose yourself in the NOVA countryside and be surprised!

Middletown and Strasburg are kinda cool over in the Valley.... Also another vote for Middleburg and I'll add Upperville to that because it's close to Middleburg (there really doesn't appear to be much to DO per se in Upperville, but it's a gorgeous little town.).

You mentioned Manassas...old town Manassas is gorgeous. Worth a visit. If you're doing a day tripper to see some of these, you'd do well to check out Fredericksburg, then up to Occoquan (small artsy historic town worth a visit!), bounce over to Old Town Manassas, then up to Leesburg. Middleburg would be nice to hit as well on your way from Manassas to Leesburg if you have time.

Certainly not Manassas. However, Middleburg, The plains, Upperville, Aldie and Paris offer wineries, point to point horse racing events, Polo and good restaurants for a start. It is a polished, sophisticated and unmolested pocket of a country life style. Wait for Spring, though. Enjoy the one day adventures!
