Hello, Everyone:

I am in the process of relocating to northern Virginia from Florida. Both my wife and I are taking civilian jobs near Fort Belvoir. Our housing budget has brought us to look at West Springfield. We’ve seen a couple of listings in neighborhoods off Rolling Road (West Springfield, West Springfield Village, and Rolling Valley). We visited the area once and liked the fact that these neighborhoods are close to work, shopping, and a large park with hiking trails and a nature center.

I’ve heard good things about the City Data Forum, so I’d like to ask the locals on here if they can share any thoughts about investing in these neighborhoods and the wider area. Pros? Cons?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for asking. Not today, but possibly in the future (5-7 years).

I live in Burke and my backyard is on the border between Burke and West Springfield. Perfectly fine place to live, especially if your commute is relatively close. We like that central/southernish Fairfax has easy access to mass transit, the major highways, and plenty of shopping. Traffic isn't wonderful, but better than to the north and you don't need to rely on 236/66/50 for much. There's plenty of great parks in the area and especially as you get towards the Potomac, very interesting places.

If a TH is doable, Kingstowne is the closest "suburb" to Fort Belvoir depending on which gate you are going to. Also easy access to some of the off post areas off Fairfax County Parkway. Lots of paths, access to shopping, 2 pools and fitness centers.
