After living here for 5 years, I've almost given up on trying to define what area is considered "Northern Virginia".

If you ask 50 people this questions, you would get 50 answers.

Where is Northern Virginia?

Is Reston in Northern Virginia?

If so, does Manassas make the list?

If so, what about Stafford?

How far away from "x" point will an area fit the "Northern Virginia" qualification?

Maybe this group can define Northern Virginia and officially answer this question.

Where does Northern Virginia begin or end?

To me, anywhere north of Stafford and anything east of Fauquier county. So Prince William County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Arlington County and Alexandria.

A very good question with no right or wrong answer. I personally go with any part of VA included in the Washington MSA. I realize that this is a broader area than most would consider as Northern VA.

Agreed and I'd say this is how most people decipher what is and isn't Northern VA.

I consider COG when I think where NOVA is located but I now tend to place Stafford in NOVA as well.
