Hello...I'm hoping someone can help me out with this. My husband and I are thinking about moving to Lorton, VA but we were hoping someone could tell us what the commute would be like from Lorton to the Arlington Cemetary area. My husband works at Fort Myer which is right there. We were thinking that if Lorton looks like a terrible commute, then we may move to Chantilly instead. Does anyone have any input on this? Thanks in advance for any advice!

PS. Riding the metro is not an option for my husband since he has to be at work so early.

Well, one thing is for sure... the commute will be similar, if you live in Lorton or Chantilly. A lot depends on when he needs to be at work and what you consider a 'terrible commute'. The commute will be a lot shorter if he can get to work by 6, and leave before 3. I say 6 am and 3 pm, because this would allow him to use the HOV lanes before they are restricted, and also before it gets too busy. The commute will be around 30-40 minutes, if he can hit those times.

You mentioned that he has to be at work early... so it sounds like this might work. I think Lorton would be your best bet between the two options.

Thank you! Well, I don't think he will have any problems in the morning since he leaves so early, but in the afternoon he leaves work between 3 and 5 everyday. During typical rush-hour, how long do you think it would take him to get home to Lorton?

During typical rush-hour, you could easily be looking at about 90 very unpleasant minutes. It won't kill him in any case as long as it's an every now and then thing, but if he's leaving Ft. Myer every day at 5:00, that will start to take a toll...
