This is our second year at Discovery Elementary, and I noticed that the rating on greatschools.org dropped significantly from last year (from 8 to 5!). I know, greatschools.org is just a website, but this kind of thing doesn't happen for no reason and I am wondering what other residents think about this school in general.
Not to sounds racist, but the school is very "diverse", in my daughter's class there are only 4 "standard" American names out of 18 students...I wonder if this has anything to do, generally speaking such high percentage of ESL/immigrant population can impact the test scores significantly...
But I am fairly new to the area, and may not know the entire picture...

Did I miss some information? Since when does not having a "standard' American name equate to ESL??

If you didn’t want diversity, you moved to the wrong place (NoVa).

Ok, thanks. Do you have any input regarding the school?

You would do well to instill in your children a sense of being part of a global community, while some kids might be ESL students and are adapting to US culture, and initially might bring scores down in 1 year many get excellent grades, speak 2 or more languages, and are far more adaptable to the current and future state of the world. Your standard american name b.s. is unintelligent (to say it nicely) and meaningless.

Honestly where my kids went to school average rating in Sterling area floats around 5- 6 on various website. However, we ignored since the value of education is multifaceted. We were always happy with the teachers and their drive to educate the young mind. If there were years where they did like their teacher we taught our kids that's part of life package. We helped them through this.

We can shelter them so long and so far. Unless they are dealing with other challenges; kids do thrive in all environment we parent to make a huge deal out of small things.

Son is heading to college. Got into all VA colleges and out of state. Enjoy and Relax!
