Wife can use their free shuttle to Metro station and you should be able to stay under an hour going to Sterling or Chantilly. Good shopping right across the street (walk) with Whole Foods, rests., etc. Safe area.

City of Fairfax or Merrifield areas could work well for both of you. Ideally something near the metro stations but even if she needs to drive or scooter to the metro.

Reston close to the metro is a good idea. Getting dropped off at a metro stop will save your wife the most amount of time. Driving to park/ride lot, ride to metro, wait for train, walk to office on the other end...timing the bus on the trip home, etc so she would be looking at 90 minutes most the time. If your work location is off 28, the majority of traffic is heading north in the am. My two cents is that having one working parent working close to home is ideal with small children if you want to maximize time spent with your kids instead of sitting in the car.

I live just a little farther away from Wiehle-Reston East Station than the properties that I linked above and before retirement a few years ago I worked near Federal Triangle Station in central DC. Most days it would be 70-75 minutes door to door. When the stars were aligned I could make it in just over an hour and when there was a minor problem on metro it was about 90 minutes. A few times with major metro problems it was pushing 2 hours.
