Is this even bad for a gas station? Is this lucrative business they really want to be in?

Anytime they get a vehicle into their station it can lead to other things so I believe it is. Good honest ones will do an inspection and send people on their way but often other people will have oil changes and so on completed while it is there.

It's pretty good business for the inspector. Inspection is like $17. The shop gets $1, and the inspector gets the rest. If something fails, chances are they'll get whatever that failed fixed at the shop. Otherwise you'll have to come back, wait in line and get it reinspected and pay another $1.

I remember back in the 60s a guy would make a house call every 6 months from Rays Auto in Falls Church ant put stickers on all my parents cars.
Then again that's also back when "massage parlors" were operating all over FC City.

Hmmmmm, like all manufacturers never make errors on safety equipment? Or better yet, try to rig the system?

You better believe upselling is big business for State Inspection Stations. I do mortgage loans and an applicant had to explain why the gross income declined one year over the next by almost 100K. They lost their State Inspection certification for 6 months. Granted, it was more than a gas station, more like a service center, with one bad apple of several inspectors. The lost earnings had nothing to do with the couple dollars they were making on each car's inspection and everything to do with inspection related repairs.

I'm a inspector and technician and if the vehicle was manufactured to have the red brake light come on with the park brake engaged then yes it would fail, some of the older cars the light would only come on if the brake fluid was to get low, if there is a switch attached to your park brake pedal then the light has to come on when you engage it.

Also the park brake has to hold the vehicle at a slight idle in drive in order to pass.

Also for inspection your ABS light can be on and you should still pass but if the red brake light stays on then it fails.
