I'm not sure if this belongs in this area or politics. Sorry.

I live in Hampton Roads and want to go to DC for Obama's inauguration event. I tried booking a hotel yesterday but it appears that all of them (that I found within DC and outside like Springfield, etc.) are either booked or aren't taking reservations for January 19 or 20. It appears that my only option is to drive up and back in the same day.

That being said, can anyone inform me on where I can park my car for an extended amount of time within DC (as close to the White House as possible) that is relatively safe and won't charge me out the behind for parking??

I'm pretty sure I'm out of my mind for attempting this but you know...it's kind of a big deal!!

Thanks! I would also appreciated any info in general on how insane DC becomes during these events.

You should consider parking at a Metro stop (like Fanconia-Springfield Metro - Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station (http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/Stations/station.cfm?station=95 - broken link) ) and taking the train in.

Second that. You won't get anywhere NEAR the White House in a car, anyhow.
Vienna is another possibility if you'll be coming in via I-66. Federal employees and many others have the day off, so there should be enough parking spots at one of the big stations, if you arrive early enough in the morning.
