Hello,

I am a single, first time home buyer considering purchasing a townhouse in South Reston - south of South Lakes Drive and west of Reston Parkway. More specifically, I'm looking at places in the neighborhoods along Glade Drive and Green Range Drive.

There are many 3 bed townhouses in that area in foreclosure or short sale between $140k and $200k, tax assessed at around $100k more than what they're selling for. They are mostly fixer uppers, some requiring more work than others. My budget is $200k and below, preferably below, which is low for this area but there's foreclosures to be bought.

Is this a good investment in a primary residence? I plan to rent out the extra space since they're much bigger than what I need. Also, I've read about the North vs. South Reston differences, and one of my co-workers adamantly discouraged me from buying in South Reston as opposed to North Reston. I'm gonna go with what I can afford, which places me in South Reston. Really, is South Reston that bad? The areas I saw looked fine to me.

Are you a single guy? It might be ok, but I would not encourage my child to buy in that area.

Thanks for the responses.

@Denton56 - Yes, I am a single guy. What are your reasons for not buying a house in the area?
