I am a new college graduate with a wife and 2 young kids and have been offered a job based in Manassas. Part of my work would be in Manassas with a project based in Reston. I am trying to decide where I should live to offer my family a decent option for living without too miserable a commute. Thanks.

I live there, so I'm biased, but how about Centreville? Good schools (Fairfax County), decently affordable, a 30 minute commute to Reston, and a 15 minute commute to Manassas.

If you are picking between Reston and Manassas, I'd go with Reston.

Definitely, definitely chose Reston over Manassas. One visit to both cities will satisfy your decision in minutes.

Reston has nice restaurants, bike trails and an overall active community of like-minded people. If you don't like that, that's cool. But if you do, it's great!

I live in Manassas and I would recommend not moving here. Centreville is a good suggestion and puts you between both places.

I lived in Manassas for 25 years, now live in Gainesville. Work in Reston actually. Definitely Reston over Manassas. Also Centreville as one poster said is good too. Commute to Reston from Manassas is doable - especially if you do it on the fringes of the rush hour like I do (or did, now I do it from Gainesville). However, that being said, Centreville would be much easier than Reston, and going to Manassas would be against traffic. Or, going to Manassas from Reston would also be against traffic a good part of the way. Reston is more expensive though for housing, if you are buying a house. That's how I ended up in Gainesville - I would have preferred closer to Reston but SFH home my wife wanted would have been too expensive nearer to Reston, or at least more than I wanted to spend on one anyway.

It comes down to how much commute you can tolerate and how much money you are willing to spend on a house, if you are going to buy rather than rent. Centreville would be a good compromise and it is nicer than Manassas (in my opinion).
